Europe’s Top Leagues: Who has already won and what’s still being decided?

With the European season entering its final weeks, the summer is nearly in sight – but the drama is far from over. Across the continent’s major leagues, titles have been clinched, records broken, and survival battles compressed into a handful of nerve-shredding fixtures. Here is a league-by-league breakdown of everything still to be decided.

Premier League: The Race That Has Everything

Nowhere in Europe comes close to matching the chaos unfolding in the English top flight. As of 14 May 2026, the Premier League title, European qualification spots, and the final relegation place are all still undecided — and any one of those storylines would be enough to carry an entire season.

The title race is genuinely extraordinary. Arsenal sit on 79 points from 36 games, and Manchester City are on 77 points from 36 games after Phil Foden dazzled in a 3-0 win over Crystal Palace on 13 May that trimmed the Gunners’ lead. City have two games remaining — away at Bournemouth on the final day and then at home to Aston Villa — while Arsenal still have two: a home fixture against already-relegated Burnley on 18 May, then the trip to Crystal Palace on the final day.

Arsenal can guarantee the title by winning both of their remaining games. If they do, they will finish on 85 points — beyond City’s maximum of 83 — and end a 22-year wait for a league crown. The margin for error, though, is now zero. A slip against Burnley reopens the door for Pep Guardiola’s side, who have the goal difference advantage.

One step below the title race, the battle for the remaining Champions League places has its own compelling subplot. Manchester United, transformed under Michael Carrick since January, have done enough to confirm third place on 65 points. Fourth and fifth, however, remain in flux: Liverpool and Aston Villa are locked together on 59 points, separated by goal difference, with Bournemouth only six points further back in sixth.

The FA Cup final between Chelsea and Manchester City on 17 May adds another layer of complexity. City, already in the Champions League, cannot take a Europa League place they do not need — meaning the FA Cup winner’s Europa League slot would pass to the highest-placed eligible team. As it stands, sixth place carries a Europa League berth, and with Bournemouth (55 points), Brighton (53), Brentford (51), Chelsea (49) and Everton (49) all still in contention, the European picture will be shaped as much by final-day goal differences as by outright results.

At the other end, the third and final relegation spot is not yet settled. Wolverhampton Wanderers and Burnley are already down, but West Ham United — on 36 points in 18th — are fighting for their top-flight lives. Tottenham Hotspur, a club that endured three managerial changes across the season before Roberto De Zerbi arrived in March, sit just two points above the drop zone on 38 points. Their recent improvement under De Zerbi has been real but fragile, and with the Hammers still to play Newcastle, there is everything left to play for at the bottom.

La Liga: Barcelona’s Coronation

Spain’s title race ended with appropriate theatre. Barcelona officially retained their La Liga crown on 10 May after a 2-0 victory over Real Madrid at the Camp Nou — a win that confirmed their 29th Spanish title with three games to spare. It was a statement performance from Hansi Flick’s side, who have been consistently dominant across the season. With relegation and European places largely resolved, the final three matchdays will serve as little more than a lap of honour for the champions.

Ligue 1: PSG’s Record-Breaking Dominance

Paris Saint-Germain mathematically secured a record-extending fourteenth Ligue 1 title on 13 May, defeating closest challengers Lens 2-0 with one round of fixtures still to play. It continues a period of near-total domestic dominance for the Parisians, who have now won the title in five of the past six seasons. With PSG focused on their continental ambitions, the final matchday is a formality.

Serie A: Inter Back on Top

Antonio Conte’s Napoli tenure is now part of Serie A folklore, but it is Inter Milan who are champions once more. Simone Inzaghi’s side clinched their 21st Scudetto on 3 May with a 2-0 home win over Parma, finishing on 85 points from 36 games — a dominant title defence. Napoli are second on 70 points, with Juventus, AC Milan and a genuinely surprising Como all separated by just three points in the race for the remaining Champions League berths. Two games remain in Serie A, and the battle for European spots down to fourth is still alive.

Bundesliga: Bayern Done, but Drama on Both Ends

Bayern Munich were crowned champions on 19 April, a 34th Bundesliga title sealed four games before the season’s end. They also broke the competition’s all-time goals record in the process. The title is long decided — but the final matchday on 16 May is shaping up to be one of the most dramatic in the division’s history across two separate battles.

The fourth and final Champions League berth is being contested by three clubs: VfB Stuttgart and Hoffenheim are level on 61 points, while Bayer Leverkusen sit three points behind on 58 but with a goal difference just one inferior to Stuttgart. All three clubs play their final fixtures simultaneously, meaning any scenario is possible. At the other end, the Bundesliga has never seen anything quite like this: Wolfsburg, Heidenheim and St Pauli enter the final day all level on 26 points.

Two will be relegated directly, with the third entering the promotion-relegation play-off. A Bundesliga final day with both the Champions League place and two relegation spots to be decided across the same 90 minutes is without modern precedent.

Eredivisie: PSV’s Hat-Trick of Titles

PSV Eindhoven claimed their third consecutive Eredivisie title on 5 April, clinching the championship after Feyenoord dropped points in a 0-0 draw with Volendam. It was their 27th Dutch title overall, and another statement of domestic dominance from a club that has made consistency its calling card. Ismaël Saibari has been one of the division’s standout performers and is in contention for the Eredivisie Player of the Year award as the final rounds play out.

Liga Nos: Porto Reclaim the Crown

Porto ended Sporting CP’s two-year stranglehold on Portuguese football, claiming their 31st title in a season marked by consistency and character. The achievement was rendered bittersweet by the passing of Diogo Jota, with captain Diogo Costa paying tribute as the title was confirmed. Sporting had been defending champions in each of the previous two seasons, making Porto’s reclamation all the more significant. The season wraps up with European places still to be finalised across the chasing pack.
