Transfer Update 2: Rogers SMASHES the British record as the window catches fire

The last ten days have turned a simmering transfer window into a full boil. A British transfer record has tumbled, Manchester United have quietly assembled a new-look midfield, Arsenal have gone shopping in Belgium, and the Saudi Pro League has gatecrashed a Serie A deal at the eleventh hour. Aston Villa, meanwhile, have been the summer’s busiest club, cashing in on two of their stars and reinvesting at pace. Here is everything that has actually got over the line since our last update, the deals edging towards completion, and the rumours worth watching before the window slams shut on 1 September.

Rogers smashes the British transfer record for Chelsea

Chelsea have broken the British transfer record to sign Morgan Rogers from Aston Villa, agreeing a fee reported at £117m for the 23-year-old England international. It is a stunning statement of intent, edging past the £116m Manchester City paid Nottingham Forest for Elliot Anderson earlier this window, and it hands Xabi Alonso a versatile forward who can drift off the left or operate through the middle as a wide number ten. Rogers, fresh from starting England’s World Cup semi-final defeat to Argentina, has put pen to paper on a six-year contract with the option of a seventh.

Arsenal pushed hard and even had an agreement in place with the player’s camp, but Rogers chose Stamford Bridge and a reunion with his old Manchester City academy friend Cole Palmer. Villa bank a colossal fee; Chelsea get a genuine difference-maker who has already proven himself at the top end of the Premier League.

Tielemans anchors Manchester United’s midfield rebuild

Manchester United moved decisively to trigger the £35m release clause in Youri Tielemans’ Aston Villa contract, unveiling the Belgium captain in the number 18 shirt on 14 July. The 29-year-old has signed a five-year deal and becomes United’s second midfield arrival of the summer, following the £50m transfer of Andrey Santos from Chelsea. Tielemans lands at Old Trafford with more than 240 Premier League appearances behind him, a Europa League winners’ medal from Villa’s run last season, and the ready-made composure United’s rebuild has been crying out for.

He captained Belgium at the World Cup before their exit to Spain, and arrives with a reputation for delivering on the biggest stage, most famously his winner in Leicester’s 2021 FA Cup final triumph. A shrewd, low-risk piece of business.

Tzolis edges towards the Emirates

Arsenal have agreed a deal worth around £34m (€40m) to sign Christos Tzolis from Club Brugge, with a medical booked and an official announcement expected imminently. The 24-year-old Greece winger reportedly turned down other suitors to hold out for the Gunners, making it clear it was Arsenal or nothing.

Tzolis would follow goalkeeper Illan Meslier and the permanent signing of Piero Hincapie (£34.5m from Bayer Leverkusen) through the door at the Emirates. Arteta is not finished, either. With William Saliba facing a lengthy spell on the sidelines, a new centre-back has jumped to the top of Arsenal’s priority list. Further attacking reinforcements are not being ruled out either, with Atletico’s Julian Alvarez and Bradley Barcola of PSG both admired at Arsenal.

Summerville chooses Saudi riches over Roma

In the most dramatic twist of the week, Al-Hilal have hijacked Roma’s move for Crysencio Summerville, agreeing a package worth £68.2m (€80m) with West Ham for the Netherlands winger. Roma had a structure in place at closer to €50m and were waiting only for the final all-clear when Simone Inzaghi’s side dived in and blew them out of the water on both the fee and personal terms, with reports putting Summerville’s proposed salary at up to €15m a year.

The 24-year-old, relegated with West Ham last season but excellent at the World Cup, where he scored twice, now heads to Saudi Arabia for his medical. It represents another enormous sale for the Hammers as they adjust to Championship life, following Mateus Fernandes’ switch to Tottenham. Manchester United, Roma and Aston Villa all miss out.

Manzambi lands as Villa’s Rogers replacement

Aston Villa wasted no time reinvesting the Rogers transfer windfall. Unai Emery’s side broke their club record to sign Switzerland midfielder Johan Manzambi from Freiburg in a deal worth up to £59.5m, seeing off competition from Newcastle for the 20-year-old. Manzambi lit up the World Cup with three goals and gives Villa fresh legs, drive and creativity following the departures of both Rogers and Tielemans, and with Amadou Onana sidelined by a long-term knee problem.

Spending a club-record fee on a player still so early in his career is a bold bet, but Villa’s recruitment under Emery has more than earned the benefit of the doubt. Emery is now hunting a new winger and a striker to complete his reshape.

Vuskovic gives Brighton a statement of intent

Brighton have smashed their own transfer record to bring in teenage centre-back Luka Vuskovic from Tottenham, a guaranteed £46m rising to £50m with add-ons. The 19-year-old Croatia international, back from an impressive loan spell at Hamburg, has signed a five-year deal and arrives as the direct replacement for Jan Paul van Hecke, who moved to Spurs in the opposite direction. Tottenham inserted a 20% sell-on clause into the agreement.

Spending record money on a defender who is yet to play a senior Premier League minute is a gamble, but Vuskovic is widely rated among the best young players in world football, a commanding 6ft 4in presence with genuine ability on the ball. For a club that trades so cleverly, this is a rare splurge, and a clear signal of ambition.

The rumour mill: Garnacho leads the queue

The noisiest transfer saga concerns Alejandro Garnacho. Having banked the Rogers fee, Aston Villa have made an official bid to sign the Chelsea winger, with talks centred on an initial loan and a buy clause. Chelsea value the Argentine at around £42m and are keen to move him on after a difficult first season at Stamford Bridge, but Garnacho is said to prefer a switch to AS Roma. Villa have also sounded out Chelsea about Nicolas Jackson as they search for a striker, though they are only expected to land one of the pair.

Elsewhere, Manchester United are weighing up left-wing options including Ismaila Sarr and Iliman Ndiaye after missing out on Summerville, while Arsenal continue to chase a centre-back, with free agent John Stones floated as short-term cover for the injured Saliba and Maxence Lacroix another name in the frame. With the window open until 1 September, expect plenty more twists.

FAQs

Is the Morgan Rogers deal a British transfer record?
Yes. At a reported £117m, Rogers’ transfer from Aston Villa to Chelsea narrowly beats the £116m Manchester City paid Nottingham Forest for Elliot Anderson earlier this summer.

Have the Tzolis and Summerville transfers been officially confirmed?
Both are agreed and at the medical stage rather than fully announced. At the time of writing, Christos Tzolis to Arsenal and Crysencio Summerville to Al-Hilal were both expected to be rubber-stamped within days.

When does the 2026 summer transfer window close?
The transfer window shuts on 1 September, so there is still time for several more big-money moves.
