The Community Shield has spent two decades being dismissed as a glorified friendly, and this year it comes with more genuine intrigue than most of the fixtures that follow it. Arsenal arrive as Premier League champions for the first time in 22 years. Manchester City arrive with a new manager taking charge of a competitive match for the first time since Pep Guardiola left. Both squads are half-assembled after a World Cup summer. And it is happening in Wales.

The Community Shield essentially kicks off the English football season – we’re back!
Why Cardiff
A pre-booked concert at Wembley (The Weeknd) has pushed the Shield out of England for the first time since 2006, and the 74,500-capacity Principality Stadium takes the fixture. Arsenal beat Manchester United in Cardiff in the 2005 FA Cup final with Patrick Vieira converting the decisive penalty, so there are fond memories there.
Two teams in very different places
Arsenal’s pre-season has been the worse of the two by some distance. A 3-0 win over MK Dons behind closed doors and a 4-1 win at Girona were followed by a 3-1 defeat to Real Betis in Dublin, a 3-2 loss to Borussia Dortmund at the Emirates, and a 1-1 draw with Cesc Fàbregas’s Como on Wednesday, won 4-3 on penalties. One win from four public friendlies is not what a champion wants.
Mikel Arteta’s framing was that his squad ticked a lot of boxes, which is the correct thing to say when your internationals have trickled back in stages and 18-year-olds have filled half your back line. Against Como he left out Bukayo Saka, Declan Rice and Martín Zubimendi despite having them available, gave first cameos to Eberechi Eze, David Raya, Mikel Merino and Noni Madueke, and handed Bruno Guimarães his debut off the bench after three training sessions.
City have gone the other way. Enzo Maresca’s Asian tour produced a 1-1 draw with Inter in Hong Kong, lost 3-1 on penalties, then 3-1 wins over a K-League All-Stars XI and Atlético Madrid in Seoul, Omar Marmoush scoring twice in the latter. Unbeaten across 90 minutes all summer.
Maresca has refused the friendly framing outright, describing it in his press conference as a trophy and a final. That is both true and useful to say when you are following Guardiola and your first competitive result will be scrutinised by everyone.
Team news
Arsenal are without two first-choice defenders. William Saliba suffered a back injury on World Cup duty with France and will miss the start of the season; Jurriën Timber remains weeks away. That guts the defence that conceded 27 league goals last season, and it means Piero Hincapié, signed permanently from Bayer Leverkusen this summer, likely starts alongside Gabriel with Cristhian Mosquera or Riccardo Calafiori shuffled across. Still very strong.
Arsenal are keen to upgrade their defensivr depth, especially with William Saliba still injured.

Saka, Rice and Zubimendi should all feature after being rested midweek. Viktor Gyökeres carries the goalscoring burden and has not looked sharp; Arsenal created chances against Como without taking them, Gabriel Jesus missing an open goal inside seven minutes.
City have their own problem in exactly the position they can least afford it. Rodri underwent back surgery after captaining Spain to the World Cup and only returned to the club on Friday. He will not play. His future remains unresolved, with Real Madrid holding personal terms and the clubs far apart on a fee, which adds a layer of awkwardness to a fixture City would like to treat as a fresh start.
Erling Haaland is a doubt after an extended post-World Cup break, Savinho has been ill, and Jack Grealish has been training individually. Elliot Anderson, the £116m club-record signing from Nottingham Forest, plus Marc Guéhi, Nico O’Reilly, Jérémy Doku and Rayan Cherki all rejoined training this week and will be short of rhythm.

The recent record
City hold the head-to-head. They beat Arsenal 2-0 in the Carabao Cup final at Wembley in March and won 2-1 at the Etihad in April, Haaland with the decisive contribution. Across the last five meetings in all competitions it is three City wins, one Arsenal win and a draw.
The Shield itself tells a different story. Arsenal are chasing an 18th, and only Manchester United have won it more often. They have won their last five appearances and nine of their last 11. City have appeared ten times in fifteen years but lost three of their last four, including the 2023 shootout.
What to actually watch for
Three things. First, Arsenal’s defensive shape without Saliba, because a back line that was the best in Europe last season is the single biggest reason they are favourites and it is missing its best player. Hincapié’s first competitive start alongside Gabriel matters more than the result.
Second, Maresca’s structure. City were already drifting from pure possession under Guardiola, hitting five-year highs for through-balls and fast breaks alongside a five-year low for possession. Whether Maresca reverses or accelerates that tells you a lot about the next nine months.
Third, penalties. The last three editions have all been settled from twelve yards, as have six of the last nine, and both sides have taken shootouts this pre-season.
