NFL Playoff Predictions 2026: Projecting the Final Standings and Wild Cards

The 2026 NFL season has reached the point where early surprises stop looking cute and start looking permanent. Seven weeks have already sorted the league into contenders, pretenders and teams that are simply buying draft capital. The NFL playoff picture 2026 is no longer a curiosity. It is a forecast problem.

This feature projects the final NFL 2026 standings for every team in both conferences. The projections are based on current records, remaining schedules, quarterback play, injuries, defensive and offensive trends, division congestion and the likelihood that some hot starts cool off while some quiet ones heat up. These are opinions with receipts, not clinches. The second half always invents new chaos. The point of midseason NFL playoff predictions is to decide which chaos looks temporary and which looks structural.

Current records reflect the league through Thursday night of Week 8, with Green Bay’s win over Carolina already in the books and the rest of the weekend still ahead.

The AFC playoff picture is top-heavy and middle-crowded. Buffalo and Denver still look like the conference’s best complete teams after last night. Jacksonville owns the softest path to a division title. The AFC North will decide almost everything else, because four teams with winning records are fighting for one automatic bid and two wild-card leftovers.

Projected AFC playoff field: Bills, Broncos, Jaguars, Bengals, Chiefs, Steelers, Patriots.

Why the AFC board looks like this

Buffalo takes the projected No. 1 seed after another convincing week, improving to 6-1 with a dominant 36-10 victory over Baltimore. Josh Allen remains the biggest reason to trust the Bills over a full season. Their offense can win through the air or on the ground, while the defense has shown it can make life difficult for even the strongest quarterbacks. The remaining schedule includes several difficult tests, but Buffalo has enough balance to finish 14-3 and secure home-field advantage throughout the AFC playoffs. Denver moves into the second seed after arguably the most important result of Week 8. The Broncos overturned a late deficit to beat Kansas City 28-24, extending their winning streak to four games and taking control of the AFC West. At 6-2, Denver has established itself as a legitimate contender, with its defense providing a foundation that should hold up against tougher opponents. The Chiefs remain dangerous, but the division is now Denver’s to lose. The projection is a Broncos division title and a top-four finish, with Kansas City forced to settle for a wild-card position.

Pittsburgh takes control of the AFC North after dismantling Cleveland 27-6. The Steelers are now 6-2 and have established a clear advantage over the rest of the division, particularly after their dominant defensive performance against the Browns. Cincinnati remains firmly in the conversation at 5-2, however, and Joe Burrow continues to give the Bengals one of the conference’s most dangerous offenses. His six-touchdown performance against Tennessee, including a dramatic comeback victory, showed why Cincinnati cannot be discounted. The Steelers have the advantage in the standings, but the Bengals have enough offensive firepower to make the division race uncomfortable through December. Pittsburgh gets the edge in this projection, finishing as AFC North champions at 11-6, with Cincinnati taking a wild-card spot. Cleveland’s 5-3 record keeps it in the hunt, although its offensive limitations make a late-season collapse a realistic possibility.

Jacksonville continues to look like one of the AFC’s most convincing teams. The Jaguars improved to 5-2 after crushing Indianapolis 42-7, with Trevor Lawrence and the offense producing another dominant performance. Their plus-85 point differential is particularly impressive and suggests their record is no accident. Jacksonville also benefits from a relatively favourable path through the AFC South, where Houston has struggled to find consistency and Indianapolis has fallen to 2-6. The Jaguars are projected to finish 12-5, win the division and claim the fourth seed. They may not have the same national profile as Buffalo or Kansas City, but their current form makes them a genuine threat to anyone in the conference.

Kansas City remains firmly in the playoff picture despite losing control of the AFC West. Patrick Mahomes has too much experience and quality for the Chiefs to be written off after one defeat, and their 5-2 record still provides a strong foundation. The loss to Denver was damaging, particularly because it came against a direct divisional rival, but the Chiefs have a favourable stretch ahead that should allow them to recover. Cincinnati also deserves a place in the projected playoff field after winning three consecutive games. Burrow’s recent performances have transformed the Bengals from an inconsistent team into one of the AFC’s most dangerous wild-card contenders. Both teams are projected to finish 11-6, with Kansas City taking the fifth seed and Cincinnati sixth.

New England completes the AFC playoff field at No. 7, moving further ahead of Baltimore after a 24-19 victory over Miami. The Patriots are now 5-3 and have won enough important games to establish themselves as legitimate postseason contenders. Their 5-1 conference record could prove particularly valuable if the wild-card race tightens later in the season. Baltimore, meanwhile, has suffered a significant setback. The Ravens fell 36-10 to Buffalo and now face an extended period without Lamar Jackson, who is set to undergo surgery on his right thumb. Losing their quarterback makes an already difficult climb considerably harder. The Patriots are projected to finish 10-7 and claim the final playoff position, leaving Baltimore on the outside looking in.

NFC Final Standings Prediction

The NFC playoff picture is defined by two truths that do not get along. Minnesota is undefeated and deserves respect. San Francisco is still the more complete roster over a 17-game haul. The NFC North will flood the wild-card race. The NFC South will crowning a champion that nobody outside the division wants to talk about until January.

Projected NFC playoff field: 49ers, Vikings, Falcons, Giants, Lions, Bears, Seahawks.

Why the NFC board looks like this

San Francisco takes over as the projected No. 1 seed in the NFC after Minnesota finally suffered its first defeat of the season. The 49ers are 6-1 following their bye week and remain one of the most complete teams in football. Their earlier loss to Atlanta exposed some defensive vulnerabilities, but the overall profile remains strong. San Francisco has scored 197 points through seven games, owns a plus-58 scoring differential and has a relatively manageable remaining schedule compared with some of its closest competitors. The 49ers still have work to do, but their combination of offensive firepower and experience makes them the safest choice to finish with the conference’s best record. A 13-4 finish would secure the first-round bye and home-field advantage throughout the NFC playoffs.

Minnesota drops to the second seed but remains the favourite to win the NFC North. The Vikings’ unbeaten start ended in Detroit, where the Lions handed them a 19-15 defeat in a game that highlighted some of the limitations in their offense. Brian Flores’ defense remains among the league’s best, allowing just 13.3 points per game, but the lack of consistent offensive production is becoming increasingly difficult to ignore. Minnesota has scored only 140 points through seven games and the second least amount of touchdowns in the league, a relatively modest total for a team with Super Bowl ambitions. The remaining schedule is also demanding, with Buffalo, Green Bay and San Francisco still to come. Nevertheless, the Vikings have built enough of a cushion to remain favourites in the division. A 12-5 finish feels realistic, although their chances of securing the NFC’s top seed have taken a hit.

The NFC North could send three teams to the playoffs, making it one of the most competitive divisions in football. Detroit strengthened its position with the 19-15 win over Minnesota, improving to 5-2 and proving it has the quality to challenge for the division title. Jahmyr Gibbs delivered another outstanding performance, while Jared Goff continues to lead an offense capable of scoring against anyone. Chicago is also 5-2, with Caleb Williams and the Bears showing enough progress to remain firmly in the playoff conversation. Their Monday night meeting with Seattle could have important implications for the wild-card race. Green Bay, meanwhile, improved to 5-3 after beating Carolina 27-19, extending its winning run to four victories in five games. The Packers have quietly put themselves back in contention and have enough talent to make a late push. The projection gives Detroit the fifth seed, Chicago the sixth and Green Bay the seventh, meaning Minnesota could win the division while all three rivals still reach the postseason.

The NFC East remains New York’s division to lose. The Giants are 4-2-1 and maintained their position at the top while watching Dallas suffer a damaging 33-30 defeat to Arizona. The Cowboys are now 3-5, and their defensive inconsistency is making it difficult to trust them in a race that remains open. Philadelphia has fallen to 2-5 after another disappointing defeat, this time against Washington, and its season is becoming increasingly difficult to rescue. The Giants have not been spectacular, but they have been more consistent than their divisional rivals. Their record and position give them a significant advantage heading into the second half of the season. New York is projected to finish 10-6-1, win the NFC East and claim the third seed, giving the Giants a valuable home playoff game.

Carolina remains the unlikely favourite to win the NFC South, despite losing 27-19 to Green Bay in Week 8. The Panthers are 3-4 and currently lead a division where every other team has struggled to build momentum. Tampa Bay improved to 3-5 after shutting out Atlanta 16-0, while the Falcons fell to the same record. New Orleans is also 2-5 and has yet to establish a consistent identity. Carolina’s position at the top of the division is hardly convincing, but the lack of a dominant challenger makes the Panthers the logical choice for now. The Buccaneers have enough experience to make a late push, particularly if Baker Mayfield can rediscover his best form, but they have too much ground to make up. Carolina is projected to finish 9-8 and win the division, earning the fourth seed despite having a losing record.

Biggest Calls in the NFL Playoff Predictions 2026

Projected No. 1 seeds: Buffalo and San Francisco

Buffalo and San Francisco remain the two strongest candidates for the conference’s top seeds after Week 8. The Bills strengthened their case with a commanding 36-10 victory over Baltimore, improving to 6-1 and reinforcing their position as the AFC’s most complete team. Josh Allen continues to give Buffalo an advantage that few quarterbacks can match, particularly when games become difficult late in the season.

San Francisco takes the NFC’s top spot despite being idle in Week 8. The 49ers are also 6-1 and have the conference’s best scoring differential at plus-58. Minnesota’s first defeat, a 19-15 loss to Detroit, has opened the door for San Francisco to move ahead in the race for home-field advantage. The Vikings remain dangerous, but their offensive limitations make it difficult to project them ahead of a more balanced 49ers roster over the remaining nine games.

Division titles that could look very different by January

Denver winning the AFC West is becoming increasingly difficult to argue against. The Broncos’ 28-24 victory over Kansas City was a major statement, moving them to 6-2 and giving them control of the division. Their defense has consistently given them a chance against elite opponents, while the offense has done enough to complement it. Kansas City remains a threat, but Denver is now projected to finish first in the West and secure a top-four AFC seed.

Pittsburgh is another team whose divisional position has strengthened considerably. The Steelers improved to 6-2 after dismantling Cleveland 27-6, putting themselves in an excellent position to win the AFC North. Cincinnati remains a serious challenger at 5-2, but Pittsburgh’s defensive consistency gives it the edge.

In the NFC, Carolina remains the projected NFC South champion despite having just a 3-4 record. Tampa Bay’s 16-0 victory over Atlanta has made the division even more unpredictable, but the Panthers remain narrowly ahead of the competition. This could be another season in which the NFC South produces a division winner without a particularly impressive overall record.

Current playoff team projected to fall out: Cleveland

The Browns are 5-3 and remain within the AFC playoff picture, but their position is becoming increasingly uncomfortable. Sunday’s 27-6 defeat to Pittsburgh exposed the gap between Cleveland and the division’s leading contender. The Browns have struggled to produce consistent offense, and their recent performances make it difficult to trust them against stronger opponents.

Pittsburgh and Cincinnati are both projected to finish ahead of Cleveland in the AFC North, while Kansas City, Buffalo, Denver, Jacksonville and New England occupy the other projected playoff positions. Cleveland could still put together a late run, but the current prediction has the Browns finishing just outside the postseason.

Wild-card race to watch: New England against Baltimore

New England has emerged as the favourite for the final AFC playoff position. The Patriots improved to 5-3 after beating Miami 24-19, maintaining an impressive 5-1 conference record that could prove decisive in a tight wild-card race.

Baltimore, meanwhile, has suffered a major setback. The Ravens fell to 4-4 after a 36-10 defeat against Buffalo, and their ability to recover from the loss will be crucial. They still have the talent to challenge for a playoff position, but New England currently has the momentum and the stronger record. The Patriots are projected to take the seventh seed, leaving Baltimore on the outside looking in.

Biggest surprise team: Jacksonville as a No. 4 seed

Jacksonville continues to look like one of the AFC’s most convincing teams. The Jaguars improved to 5-2 after demolishing Indianapolis 42-7, taking their scoring differential to plus-85. Trevor Lawrence has an offense capable of producing big performances, while the team’s favourable position in the AFC South provides a clear path to the division title.

The Jaguars are projected to finish 12-5 and claim the fourth seed. They might not receive the same attention as Buffalo, Kansas City or San Francisco, but their current performances suggest they could be a difficult opponent in January.

Biggest projected fall: Philadelphia

Philadelphia’s season is quickly turning into one of the NFL’s biggest disappointments. The Eagles fell to 2-6 after losing 27-10 to Washington, extending their losing streak to six games. After leading the NFC East last season, they are now struggling to remain competitive in a division that the Giants have taken control of.

The defeat against Washington was particularly concerning. Philadelphia scored all 10 of its points in the opening quarter before being shut out for the remainder of the game. The Eagles have struggled to find answers on offense, and their defensive performances have not been enough to compensate. A postseason appearance now looks increasingly unlikely, with Philadelphia projected to finish well outside the NFC playoff picture.

Biggest projected rise: Denver’s move into the AFC’s top four

Denver has arguably made the biggest statement of any AFC contender over the past two weeks. The Broncos have beaten Arizona and Kansas City in consecutive weeks, improving to 6-2 and taking control of the AFC West.

The victory over the Chiefs was particularly important because it demonstrated that Denver can compete with the conference’s established powers. Its defense remains the biggest strength, but the offense has shown enough improvement to make the Broncos a genuine threat. A division title and a top-four seed would represent a significant achievement for a team that entered the season with plenty of questions surrounding its ability to compete with Kansas City.

Projected Wild Card Matchups

If these final NFL playoff standings hold, the Wild Card round would feature several intriguing matchups, with a number of divisional rivalries potentially deciding who advances to the next round.

AFC Wild Card round

  • (2) Denver Broncos vs (7) New England Patriots
  • (3) Pittsburgh Steelers vs (6) Cincinnati Bengals
  • (4) Jacksonville Jaguars vs (5) Kansas City Chiefs
  • (1) Buffalo Bills: First-round bye

Denver against New England would be an interesting opening matchup, particularly given the Broncos’ defensive strength and the Patriots’ recent improvement. Pittsburgh against Cincinnati would be one of the most compelling games of the round, with two AFC North rivals meeting in a postseason setting. The Steelers’ defense against Joe Burrow’s offense would be the defining matchup.

Jacksonville against Kansas City would arguably be the biggest test for the Jaguars. Patrick Mahomes has the experience to navigate difficult playoff environments, while Trevor Lawrence would have an opportunity to establish himself against one of the AFC’s most successful franchises. Buffalo would sit out the opening weekend, waiting to face the lowest remaining seed.

NFC Wild Card round

  • (2) Minnesota Vikings vs (7) Green Bay Packers
  • (3) New York Giants vs (6) Chicago Bears
  • (4) Carolina Panthers vs (5) Detroit Lions
  • (1) San Francisco 49ers: First-round bye

Minnesota against Green Bay would be an enormous divisional showdown, with the Vikings attempting to overcome their recent defeat and the Packers looking to make a statement in January. The Giants drawing Chicago would create an intriguing matchup between an established division leader and a young Bears team that has made significant progress this season.

Carolina against Detroit would be one of the more unusual matchups. The Panthers could enter the playoffs as division champions despite having a losing record, while the Lions would arrive with a much stronger overall profile. Detroit would likely be the favourite, particularly given its offensive firepower. San Francisco would receive the first-round bye and wait for its opponent.

Super Bowl 2027 Prediction

The projected path still ends with Buffalo against San Francisco in Super Bowl LXI.

The Bills remain the strongest choice in the AFC because of their combination of elite quarterback play, offensive balance and defensive consistency. Their 36-10 victory over Baltimore in Week 8 reinforced the idea that they can dominate opponents on both sides of the ball. Josh Allen gives Buffalo the ability to change games in a matter of possessions, and the team’s current position makes a run to the Super Bowl a realistic expectation.

San Francisco is the NFC’s projected representative because it remains one of the league’s most complete rosters. The 49ers have already shown they can recover from a difficult defeat, and their 6-1 record puts them in an excellent position to secure the conference’s top seed. Minnesota, Detroit and Green Bay all have the potential to challenge, but San Francisco has the experience and balance to navigate the postseason.

There are still several teams capable of disrupting that prediction. Kansas City cannot be dismissed with Mahomes at quarterback, particularly if the Chiefs find their rhythm before the playoffs. Denver has the defense to make a deep run, while Cincinnati’s offensive ceiling makes the Bengals a dangerous wild-card opponent. In the NFC, Detroit has the firepower to beat almost anyone, and Minnesota’s defense could carry the Vikings further than their offensive numbers suggest.

For now, however, Buffalo and San Francisco remain the strongest projected Super Bowl contenders.

The NFL playoff picture in 2026 is beginning to take shape, but Week 8 has demonstrated just how quickly things can change. Denver has taken control of the AFC West, Minnesota has finally lost, Pittsburgh has strengthened its grip on the AFC North and Philadelphia is running out of time to save its season. There are still nine weeks of regular-season football remaining, and the next stretch will determine which of these predictions hold up and which teams emerge as genuine January contenders.
