Roger Federer announced Thursday he was to retire from competitive tennis next week, bringing an end to a glorious 24-year career on tour.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Federer posted a heartfelt message via social media, in which the Swiss Maestro gave insight to the reasoning behind his announcement that would have been dreaded by his millions of followers across the globe.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The 41-year-old said, \u201cAs many of you know, the past three years have presented me with challenges in the form of injuries and surgeries. I\u2019ve worked hard to return to full competitive form. But I also know my body\u2019s capacities and limits, and its message to me lately has been clear.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

He continued, \u201cTennis has treated me more generously than I ever would have dreamt, and now I must recognize when it is time to end my competitive career.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n
