McManaman made that the starting point of the conversation. He would not crown a clear favourite, and he framed the derby as a match that will turn on the final third and the nerve to live with pressure.

“It’s difficult to clearly pick a team to win El Clásico, but the small details will be decisive,” McManaman told 365Scores. “Especially taking chances and handling pressure in key moments.”

That is the Clasico problem in one line. Chances are rare enough that one finish changes the night, and the psychological load is heavy enough that the next action after a miss or a goal often matters as much as the chance itself. McManaman’s reading leaves little room for narrative comfort: whoever manages those moments better wins the argument.

(Photo By Javier Borrego/Europa Press via Getty Images)

The Vinicius void and the Mbappe factor

Real Madrid arrive without Vinicius Junior, one of the attack’s primary difference-makers. McManaman treated that absence as a major structural hit, not a simple rotation problem, even with Kylian Mbappe available to carry the finishing load.

“Vinícius’ absence will be a major blow,” McManaman explained. “Mbappé has great abilities, but they are different players, and what Vinícius brings cannot be replaced simply by bringing in another player.”

The distinction matters for how El Clasico is likely to look. Mbappe offers elite finishing and straight-line threat through the middle. Vinicius offers a different kind of chaos from the left: isolation, dribbling pressure, and the ability to force defensive help that opens space for others. McManaman’s point is not that Madrid lack quality. It is that the quality is not interchangeable. Removing Vinicius changes the shape of Madrid’s threat, and that change cannot be erased by slotting another star into the same matchday list.

McManaman’s Ballon d’Or vote: Mbappe over Yamal

The interview then moved from the derby to the individual race that always sits beside it. With Lamine Yamal’s breakout form part of the wider conversation, McManaman still drew a clear line toward experience and decisive weight.

“I would choose Kylian Mbappé to win the Ballon d’Or,” the Englishman stated. “He can make the difference and has the experience, despite Lamine Yamal’s talent and the outstanding performances he has been delivering.”

That vote does not dismiss Yamal. McManaman explicitly credited the teenager’s talent and current output. His preference is about who he trusts to change the biggest nights and who already carries that record. In an El Clasico week, the Ballon d’Or answer also doubles as a Madrid attacking thesis: if Vinicius is missing, the demand on Mbappe to produce the “small details” rises again.

The Takeaway: McManaman backs Mbappe for the Ballon d’Or on difference-making and experience, while still praising Yamal’s form.

(Photo by Alvaro Medranda/Quality Sport Images/Getty Images)

What this means for El Clasico

Put together, McManaman’s exclusive comments give 365Scores a clean preview frame for El Clasico:

Do not expect the table alone to settle Barcelona vs Real Madrid.

Treat Vinicius’s absence as a real tactical problem for Madrid, not a cosmetic one.

Watch whether Mbappe can deliver the decisive actions McManaman says decide these matches.

That is the week’s story from a player who has lived both sides of the game’s biggest stages: small details, a missing left-sided star, and a Ballon d’Or preference that still lands on Mbappe.

FAQs

What did Steve McManaman say about El Clasico?

McManaman told 365Scores it is difficult to clearly pick a winner in El Clasico and that small details will be decisive, especially taking chances and handling pressure in key moments.

Does Steve McManaman think Vinicius’s absence hurts Real Madrid?

Yes.
