Reports indicate Rodríguez’s hefty $5 million annual salary was a major factor in the club’s decision, especially after a disappointing season. León finished 17th in the Apertura 2025, failing to make the playoffs.

Rodríguez’s one-year spell with the club was fraught with unmet expectations. He was originally drawn to the team by the opportunity to play in the FIFA Club World Cup, but León was ultimately disqualified, removing a key incentive for the star. As the team’s performance faltered, Rodríguez’s own prominence faded, contributing only three goals in 12 matches this season. The separation is reportedly mutual, with both the player and the club agreeing it is the best solution.

(Photo by Luis Cano/Jam Media/Getty Images)

What’s Next for James Rodríguez?

As a free agent in December, Rodríguez is now in a pivotal race against time.
