A lovely team move saw Mbappe drop deep and find Brahim, who slipped the ball in for Vinicius to finish from close range. Vinicus was denied a second goal as Starfelt cleared his chipped shot off the line in the 58th minute. Camavinga’s awful error saw Celta pull one back thanks to Duran, who set up Bamba for the goal, and a poor foul in the box from Asencio in the 91st minute meant that Alonso could slot away the penalty to take the game into extra time. Celta looked happy to slow it down and play out for penalties, cautious not to leave themselves too open at the back. But it proved unsuccessful and three quick goals from Madrid in the second half would see them cruise to a win. Endrick belted a shot in from outside the box 108 minutes in, while Valverde matched that with a brilliant strike from distance himself a few moments later. Endrick added the final touch with a cheeky backheel goal to take Madrid through to the next round. Celta, meanwhile, struggled to get into the game for large parts, evidenced by their xG of just 1.46 compared to Madrid’s xG of 2.54. And so Celta are knocked out after bravely coming back from two goals down as Real Madrid proceed to the next stage of the Copa de Rey.
